Anglo American Chairman’s Fund supports the Catholic Institute of Education

Catholic Education Magazine, November 2010
October 21, 2010 – Around 250 Catholic educators attended a conference hosted by the Catholic Institute of Education to discuss issues pertinent to their work and develop their leadership skills. The two-day conference in Johannesburg drew delegates from South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho. The main conference speaker was Emeritus Professor Patrick Duignan of the Australian Catholic University, who spoke on a number of leadership aspects and challenges facing today’s educators. In another keynote address, Standard Bank CEO Sim Tshabalala highlighted the important role played by education in building the business leaders of the future.

Catholic Institute of Education raises concerns over curriculum documents
September 27, 2010 – Last year we welcomed Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga’s efforts to simplify the curriculum and provide more guidance to teachers. However, after examining the much anticipated Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements, we are very concerned that these are inconsistent and patchy. We are also concerned that, in spite of an extension, there is very little time available for public comment.

Bishops register their horror at violence and intimidation during public service strikes
August 31, 2010 – The Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference wishes to register its horror at the incidence of violence and intimidation perpetrated by participants in the public servants’ strike. In particular, we abhor the inhuman conduct of denying doctors and patients access to hospitals, and teachers and pupils access to their schools. We are horrified that care is being denied to the weakest and most vulnerable.

August 20, 2010 – The Catholic Institute of Education has noted with concern the continued disruption of schooling in many schools in our country. We recognise the right of teachers to strike; however we strongly condemn the intimidation and violence that is taking place in parts of the country.

August 11, 2010 – Two very different speakers – one practical, one more philosophical; one Catholic, one Jewish – encouraged the more than 200 educators to be good and inspirational influences in their schools, on day two of the International Catholic School Leadership Conference.
Emeritus Professor Patrick Duignan of the Australian Catholic University presented the morning session entitled, “Nurturing Rich, Engaging, Productive Learning Environments in Schools: Influential, Authentic Leaders Making it Happen.”
