April 17, 2013 – The Catholic Institute of Education (CIE) calls on the Department of Basic Education and SADTU to urgently resolve the disputes which have resulted in the work-to-rule campaign and other industrial action of SADTU members.

Launch of Donate to Educate Campaign

November 16, 2012 – SMS ‘LEARN’ to 40305 to donate R20 towards our work in rural schools. We are launching our ‘Donate to Educate’ campaign from the 15th of November, running to the 15th of February, aiming to raise a minimum of R120 000 towards our Caring Schools Project.

National Development Plan

National Development Plan

August 17, 2012 – On Wednesday Minister Trevor Manuel handed over the National Development Plan to President Zuma. This plan is the culmination of a three year process which included extensive public comment. The plan (NDP) provides a vision and direction to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality by 2030. The NDP for education is rightly premised on the reality that the quality of education for most black children is poor, and that young people deserve better educational and economic opportunities. Poor education reduces the earning potential and career mobility of those who get jobs and can impact on the dynamism of business. The Catholic Institute of Education welcomes the 2030 vision for education which offers a high quality education, universal early childhood education, and globally competitive literacy and numeracy standards.

The Catholic Institute of Education mourns the loss of Professor Kader Asmal

June 23, 2011 – I got to know Prof Asmal during his tenure as Minister of Education. He was a clever man; impatient for change. In one of my first engagements with him, I argued for the need for good textbooks in schools and he responded: “Do you mean to tell me that textbooks are better than teachers?” I responded: “Well, Minister, a good textbook is better than a bad teacher.”
