Media statement: teachers’ strike
August 20, 2010
The Catholic Institute of Education has noted with concern the continued disruption of schooling in many schools in our country. We recognise the right of teachers to strike; however we strongly condemn the intimidation and violence that is taking place in parts of the country.
Last year the Catholic Bishops recognised that we are in a difficult situation in South Africa, and acknowledged the ever-widening gap between rich and poor. They also acknowledged the important role that teachers play in our country. The teachers’ vocation involves conscientious work, professionalism, care, love and breadth of vision. Our children are our treasure, our future and responsibility. Our children have been entrusted to us to play a role in their ongoing formation and progress.
We call on both government and the teacher unions to reopen negotiations and to find an amicable arrangement as soon as possible, as a protracted strike is not in anyone’s best interest. We are very concerned that the continued disruption of schooling will negatively impact our children, further reducing the life chances of already disadvantaged children.
