Research over a number of years in the area of school feeding schemes shows a number of benefits of these schemes.
- Summary report on the evaluations of the literacy-numeracy project in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal – In January 2003, the Catholic Institute of Education (CIE) began a literacy and numeracy project in 48 Catholic and state schools in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. This project is Phase 2 of the Whole School Development and Renewal Project. Phase 1 began in 2000 and ended in 2002 and Phase 2 ended in December 2005. The Zenex Foundation has funded both of these phases.
- Report on Problems Experienced at Free State Catholic Schools on Private Property – The following research was conducted after numerous problems in the Free State around forced removals of learners from Catholic Schools. The schools that have been affected are farm schools. Policy decisions have been taken around multi-grade teaching, learner transport and quality in farm schools which have directly impacted on the right to education of learners. While the policy directions have good intentions to improve the education of learners on farm schools, the research undertaken will show that learners have been adversely affected and in some cases serious infringements of human rights along with violations of legislation have taken place.

Window of Hope: HIV and AIDS Prevention and Care Programme – Mid-term evaluation of the CIE project – In 2001 the Catholic Institute of Education (CIE) received funds from the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to carry out an AIDS intervention and pastoral care programme. The project is based in Catholic primary schools in nine provinces.
The programme targets learners between the ages of 5 and 12. These learners are generally not sexually active and less likely to be infected with HIV through sexual intercourse. This ‘window of hope’ period offers an opportunity to work with learners to empower them to better deal with the impact of HIV in their lives.
