Who we are

The Catholic Institute of Education is an NGO that delivers programmes to Catholic schools, and the CIE Investment Company and Education Services were developed with a long term vision of ensuring our sustainability.

The CIE is an associate body of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) and has provided services to the network of 352 Catholic schools since 1985.

We have always focused our work largely in rural and peri-urban schools, situated in the poorer, less developed parts of southern Africa. 72% of Catholic schools in South Africa are public schools and there are over 6,000 teachers and 160,000 learners in these schools, who represent diverse cultures and religions, with Catholics forming the minority.

Our mission is to serve and strengthen the Catholic education network so as to enable Catholic schools to offer values-based, quality education to learners in an environment that is conducive to their physical, emotional, moral, intellectual and spiritual development as national and global citizens.

We work in the following areas:

We have offices in six of the nine provinces in South Africa - in Bethlehem in the Free State, in Polokwane in Limpopo (also serving Mpumalanga), in Keimoes in the Northern Cape, in Phokeng in the North West and in Kokstad and Marianhill in KwaZulu-Natal (also serving the Eastern Cape).

Resources

CIE provides various resources for teachers, learners and our network, to use to carry out in their projects. These resources include relevant Bills, policies, the Constitution, government Acts, reports and communication from a number of stakeholders, including the Pope.
